Motto: Reaching Beyond the Expected

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Canadian College of Business & English. We want you to feel comfortable at our school and we will answer your questions at anytime. Below is an explanation of our school policies as well as some general information about Toronto and our school.

1) STUDENT'S PLACEMENT TEST

How will I know my level?

All students will take an English Placement Test when they arrive at the school, either before they start their classes or on the same day as their classes begin. The test takes fifty minutes and is divided into three categories: Grammar, Vocabulary and Reading.  A ten-minute Spoken interview will make up the remainder of the test. Students will be told their score but copies of the test or answers to the test will not be given to the students because we want to know your English level, not how much English you can memorize. Please see the chart below.

2) CHANGING LEVELS

When can I change my level?

After two months every student will get the chance to write the level test which will allow them to progress to the next level. The student will need to reach a certain score as well as get recommendations from their teachers. If a student is advancing rapidly and gets permission from their teachers, they may book an appointment with the Administration to write the level test after one month of studies to see if their score has advanced.

3) PROGRAM SELECTION

How do I know what classes to take?

We have Academic Counselors who can help students decide which programs and classes best suit their needs. If you want to improve your general English, then the ESL program may be best for you. If you plan on doing business with the English-speaking world, then maybe our Business English class would be perfect for you. If you are going to take an English test or want to enter an English-speaking school or university, then taking our T.O.E.F.L or T.O.E.I.C. programs would help you the most.

4) ABSENTEEISM

What happens if I don't attend classes?

If a student is going to be absent, he or she has to either tell his or her teacher(s) in advance or phone the school (416-703-7676) before the class begins. If the student is absent for more than three days and has not told anyone, we assume that he or she has quit school and we will un-register them; it will cost $50 to reregister. Sometimes there is a waiting list to get into certain classes and if we do not know where a student is, we may give his or her space away to a student who wants to attend those classes. If a student is absent for more than ten percent of his or her classes, he or she may not be eligible for a certificate or diploma.

5) LATENESS

What happens if I am late for my class(es)?

Students will be permitted to enter class up to ten minutes late if they are tardy; repeated lateness will be addressed by the teacher. If a student arrives after ten minutes, they will not be allowed to enter class --  they must wait for break time to enter the next class. The teacher has the right to refuse any student into class if they are continually late.  Students are only allowed one late entry into class per week.

6) ENGLISH-ONLY POLICY

Am I allowed to speak my native language when I am at school or on a school activity?

No! We know that speaking English all of the time will improve your English knowledge so that is why we enforce an English-only policy. Speaking English also gives students the opportunity to make friends with students from other countries. If someone hears a student speaking their native language, the student will first get a Verbal Warning, informing them that it is not permitted. If a student is caught speaking his or her native language a second time, they will be given a Written Warning, where they will have to explain why they were speaking their native tongue. A third Warning will result in the suspension of the student, where they will have to stay home from school for one day, including any school activities scheduled for that day.

7) VACATIONS

Am I allowed to take a vacation during my studies?

You are permitted to take a vacation if you have been a student for at least four weeks and you have given the Administration one week's notice. Your vacation must not be longer than one week unless otherwise arranged with the Administration. Any unannounced vacations will be considered an absence and will not be credited to the student.
